Greetings from the edge,
Quick update from here in the broom cupboard.
I got an email the other day asking me to apply for a job opening at a local-ish library. It’s only part-time, so I’ll still have time to write, and with the commute I’ll probably even get more audiobook time out of it. It’s in the lap of the gods now, so all I can really do is hope my CV and application letter whetted their appetite enough to get me through the door. I picked up some useful pointers from my last library interview, so here goes nothing.
I’m still waiting to hear back from Asimov’s Science Fiction about my short story. As I write this, the status ticker has gone from Received to Under Review.
So somewhere out there in the world, thousands of miles away, my 6,000-word baby is sitting on an overworked editor’s desk while the Red Pen of Doom hovers over it like the Sword of Damocles.
I’ve recently fallen back into model painting. Nothing ready to show off here just yet, but I’ve picked up a few bits of kit that make life easier. Among them is a tiny vortex paint mixer which was apparently destined to receive googly eyes and be christened Sir Mixalot II.
I also have a ton of minis I’ve slowly accumulated, along with more paint than is remotely reasonable, though somehow never enough. I’ve been tumbling down a rabbit hole of YouTube painters like Ninjon and Brush and Banner, whose brushes I am probably not worthy to clean, but a guy can dream.
The Sunday roleplay group is going well too. I’ve dragged them out of swashbuckling Valtheraine and into the totalitarian state of Mondragon, where magic is outlawed, the king’s reach is long, and rebellion beats quietly beneath the surface.
Their first mission is an assassination, and they’re having a hard time because the problem isn’t one they can simply smite until it stops moving…
…then fireball whatever’s left just to be sure.
I’m leaning into that quite heavily.
