Greetings from the edge,
Still on a bit of a treadmill. The Chop Shop and Crying is a Free Action are now fully live, and today is mostly about getting the main backbone of the site up and running. I’m also looking to replace all of the AI art with stock photos or original images.
I’ve had an idea for The Chop Shop that might have legs. Working title: When “Ahhhh” Becomes “Hahaha”. It’s based on the idea that horror and comedy are basically siblings who argue at family dinners, yet share far more DNA than you might expect:
- Timing
- Tension leading to release
- Subverted expectations
The piece could explore laughter as a kind of pressure valve, with examples from The Evil Dead, The Cabin in the Woods, and even something as dead-serious as The Silence of the Lambs… where, if you don’t laugh, you might just scream.
I’m also working on an article for Crying is a Free Action about using sound as an immersion conductor at the table.
At the moment, I’m a little stymied by moving away from AI art. My one ham-fisted attempt at doing it myself was… not exactly gallery-ready. Still, it’s progress. Maybe it’s time to make peace with Photoshop.
Over on Scribophile, I’m building up karma at a steady pace, aiming for one critique a day. With a bit of luck, I’ll soon have enough to post my short story, The Bone Garden. Once I get some cold, honest feedback from readers who aren’t afraid to bruise my ego, I should be able to sharpen the draft into something stronger.
See you in the margins,
