My head has started to go down, so now that I look a lot less like a Conehead and my skull is no longer in danger of literally popping, I have been able to rejoin polite society.
I ventured forth to the library today. It was a pretty quiet day, but I helped a few people, which is always good.
I have been reading The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty, and I am loving it. One of the problems with wanting to be a writer is that you find yourself unable to simply enjoy a story because you are always asking how the author achieved a certain effect. Blatty is an expert at creating an atmosphere of apprehension and fear, and I am finding that I have to deliberately turn off the part of my brain that deals with analysis, because nothing spoils a good scare like analysing it to death.
However, I am fully cognisant that I’m going to have to read it again with my little red pencil, make notes in the margins, and do all that tedious authorly stuff.
I’m also still trying to figure out what exactly is going on in the 30th millennium. False Gods isn’t quite as strong as Horus Rising, but the promise is there that Horus will eventually fall to Chaos, so I have that to look forward to. I will say I’m having a hard time relating to these god-like Space Marines. I had a lot more fun reading Fifteen Hours, which follows a raw recruit conscripted into the Imperial Guard and dropped straight into the deep end.
It was just more… human.
I have also been falling down a Warhammer 40k rabbit hole in other ways, and some of the best nuggets I have found are the 40k music channels on YouTube, including Astartes Audio and Adeptus Anthemicus. Check them out. They are always a good time, and “Yellow Space Marines,” sung to the tune of “Yellow Submarine,” will never not be funny.
I have a new article due to go live on Wednesday, and I’m currently working on the next instalment of Tropes Under the Knife, as the Final Girl article seems to have gone down quite well.
I’ve made some cosmetic improvements to the site, and there should be a few more coming later this week.
Well, I’m off to purge the xenos, write until my eyes are squinted out of existence, and finally glue together my Bulldogs.
See you in the margins,
